Kimura’s passion for fashion took root at a young age, sparked by a childhood memory of watching a fashion show on television. “The world, the designs, and the models I saw left a lasting impression on me,” she recalls. “From that moment, I knew I wanted to be a part of that world.” This fascination with fashion led her to pursue formal training at the prestigious Bunka Fashion College in Japan, where she honed her technical skills and explored the possibilities of Design.
The Path to Creation
Kimura’s career began with a significant experience working for Yohji Yamamoto, a master of avant-garde fashion. As a conceptual and graphic designer, Kimura was given the creative freedom to explore her ideas in a high-pressure environment. “Working with Yohji Yamamoto was one of the most memorable experiences of my career,” she says. “It shaped my understanding of the fashion world and influenced my design philosophy.”
Her philosophy revolves around the coexistence of seemingly opposing elements. “I like to combine the softness and delicate textures of fabrics with the hard essence of rock,” she explains. “To use a metaphor, I create clothes as if they were people, conscious of the contradictions and diversity in human nature.” Her debut collection, titled "荒蕪" (Kobu, meaning wilderness or desolation), explored the theme of life and death, using intricate cuts and designs that evoke the image of a mummy wrapped in bandages, balancing heaviness with delicate details.
Bridging Japan and China
Kimura’s designs are deeply rooted in the craftsmanship of Japan and the grand historical aesthetics of China. “Japanese craftsmanship not only inspires me but also directly influences my work,” she says. For example, she often commissions Japanese artisans for her leather pieces, recognizing the deep connection between her work and the dwindling community of craftsmen affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her commitment to preserving and developing these traditional skills is an integral part of her brand.
While Japan’s fashion industry is celebrated for its meticulous craftsmanship and strong attachment to vintage traditions, China’s industry is dynamic and fast-growing, bursting with creativity and innovation. Kimura finds herself drawn to both worlds, incorporating the strengths of each into her designs.
Storytelling at the Core
At the heart of Yuka Kimura’s design process is a deep love for storytelling. “When I decided to create my own brand, I felt there were fewer conceptual, story-driven brands in the market,” she reflects. Her designs are inspired by cultural stories, personal memories, and moments from everyday life. Her fascination with Japanese yokai and Chinese Buddhist traditions adds mystical and narrative elements to her work, enriching the layers of meaning within her Collections.
Kimura’s love of cinema also plays a significant role in her creative process. She views fashion through a cinematic lens, often creating designs that evoke a narrative or emotional response similar to that of a film. “Movies have a huge impact on me,” she shares. “I often approach fashion from a cinematic perspective, with storytelling as a central theme.”
Looking to the Future
As Yuka Kimura looks ahead, her goals for her brand, mukcyen, are ambitious yet deeply connected to her cultural and creative roots. “I want to establish mukcyen as an international brand, bringing my fusion of cultures to a global audience,” she says. She also seeks to collaborate with artisans and artists from different fields, exploring new production methods that challenge the traditional boundaries of fashion. For Kimura, the future of fashion lies in innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to craftsmanship.
