A Glimpse into the Daily Lives of Japanese Kids
An interview with
Hara Kazuaki はら かずあき
In the heart of Japan, where time always seems to slow down to a gentle, nostalgic rhythm, there exists a world suspended in the memories of a century-old home. Through the lens of her camera, Hara Kazuaki has masterfully captured this enchanting realm, revealing the intricate tapestry of Japanese childhood like no other.
Her photography project, born out of a natural sense of love and a profound appreciation for everyday moments, offers a glimpse into the intimate lives of her children as they read, play, and live within the comforting embrace of their ancestral home and its spectacular surroundings.
What initially inspired you to document the daily lives of your children through photography?
Approximately five years ago, I found myself reflecting on what I genuinely desired to pursue. After a year of contemplation, I decided to take up photography. Given the immediate accessibility of themes, I naturally gravitated towards capturing moments involving my children.
Can you share some insights into your creative process? How do you choose the moments or settings you capture to convey the essence of Japanese childhood?
Primarily, my focus lies on capturing photos inside my home for Instagram. Residing in a century-old traditional Japanese farmhouse, I recognized a lack of content featuring children within such historical settings. To bring uniqueness into my photos, I showcase moments captured inside the distinct ambiance of my home.
Your work often shows a glimpse into your children's lives. What do you hope viewers will take away from these intimate moments?
The emotions evoked by my photos are subjective and unique to each viewer's interpretation. I intentionally refrain from nurturing specific expectations regarding what individuals should derive from my work.
Can you share a story or moment behind one of your favorite images that holds special significance to you?
My greatest satisfaction arises when I manage to capture my children in their most natural and authentic state during the photography process.
Can you tell us about your artistic influences and how they have shaped your photography style?
I draw inspiration from renowned photographers such as Yoshihiko Ueda, Yuyuki Okuyama, Kotori Kawashima, Hidetomo Hamada, and several others. Although I may not pinpoint the exact influence they've had on my photographic style, their work undeniably plays a role in shaping and enriching my approach.
Through her photography project, Hara Kazuaki invites us to witness the beauty and simplicity of everyday moments, capturing the essence of a culture deeply rooted in tradition. As we reflect on the insights shared during this interview, we are reminded of the power of art to offer a universal appreciation for the fleeting yet profound moments that shape our lives.
