MIKI MATSUBARA - A Dancing tribute
80s Japanese City Pop icon Miki Matsubara would have turned 64 last month. With her single ‘Mayonaka no Door 〜stay with me’, she placed Japan on the international radar for City Pop fans all over the world. A great occasion for a revised version of an all-time classic.
A 2023 mix was made by engineer Tamotsu Yoshida, renowned for his work on numerous classic City Pop albums. This new mix is complemented by a dynamic music video that underscores the global influence and lasting legacy of Miki Matsubara.
When Brazilian sister duo Lina and Maira, also known as The Fridman Sisters, visited Tokyo in July 2023, their love for Japanese culture converged with the discovery of "Mayonaka no Door 〜stay with me" in a Shinjuku Golden Gai bar, sparking the idea for the music video.
The music video shows BOXER and Miyu, two renowned Japanese dancers who express a platonic connection through their graceful movements. Their journey unfolds against the distinctive backdrop of a sento, serving as the origin of their connection, and continues as they dance their way through the cityscape.
Lina and Maira Fridman reflected on the project by stating, “Even on the opposite side of the world, in Brazil, Miki Matsubara's masterpiece has made an impact. There are no boundaries to a great song. We are truly beyond excited and proud to be part of this MV for such an iconic song we’ve always loved. With all our respect to Matsubara-san, we share this tribute with everyone around the world."
