Indie Festivals
Kansai Lovers
Kansai Lovers was one of the first major festivals I attended. Organized once a year around September by several live houses in the Kansai region, it features bands that have either started in or are closely tied to the local live house circuit. The festival has a communal feel—bands perform for fans who have likely seen them on smaller stages at one of the local venues.
Minami Wheel
Minami Wheel, on the other hand, offered a broader perspective on Japan’s indie music. Spanning several days in October and multiple venues across Osaka, this festival is organized by the radio station FM802 and attracts bands from all over the country. Unlike Kansai Lovers, Minami Wheel feels less local and more like a national celebration of indie music with Osaka's live houses as the host venues. The scale was larger, with numerous live houses participating, and the variety of music styles was much broader.
Record Shops
Flake Records
Flake Records is a famous independent record store located in Osaka's Minamihorie area. Known for its carefully curated selection, Flake Records primarily focuses on indie rock but offers a wide range of music genres, including mainstream and obscure titles on vinyl and CDs. Lee Structure Building
Tucked away in the Lee Structure building in Shinsaibashi, you'll discover an array of tiny record shops, each specializing in different genres. This hidden gem is arguably the best place in Osaka for record digging. Among the shops, my personal favorite is "Rare Groove," which stands out in the vibrant collection.
