In a bold display of creativity and cultural homage, SEVESKIG and (un)decided presented their latest collection in the parking lots of Tokyo’s National Stadium. Taking in account the idea of “Lucy”, an ancient human ancestor discovered in Ethiopia, the collection investigates the history and development of mankind, perfectly linking historical context and current fashion sensibilities.

SEVESKIG: A Neo Hippie Revival

SEVESKIG’s collection is a tribute to one of The Beatles’ songs – “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and therefore the psychedelic period of the 1960s. They evoke fantastical visuals and vibrant colors found in the music video for this song while merging them with current aesthetics to form an original “NEO Hippie Style” concept.

The collection features psychedelic coloring and ombré checks, capturing the dull shine of the original silk wool material. Art pieces by RIDAWO are hand-painted on leather items, bringing free imagination to life. Additionally, colorful vintage clothes are patchworked in collaboration with AVANI further emphasizing the season’s theme. Homages to motorcycle items designed by Peter Max highlight the retro-modern fusion that defines SEVESKIG’s latest offerings.

SEVESKIG’s attention to detail is evident in the intricate designs and craftsmanship. For instance, the collection includes leather jackets adorned with vibrant, hand-painted motifs and patchwork trousers that combine various textures and colors, creating a dynamic visual experience. Besides, there is an allusion to the past in its modern choice of bleached silk wool fabric with psychedelic colors while maintaining a contemporary edge.

(un)decided: Experimental Elegance

(un)decided’s collection imagines the colorful dancers from the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” music video, offering a vibrant and experimental array of clothing. The brand incorporated many daring experimental techniques and designs into its collections, such as original vertical cut jacquard, floral seersucker jacquard, and floral patterns created using salt shrinkage techniques. Vibrant floral embroidery is scattered throughout, adding a touch of whimsy and sophistication.

Similar to how the Beatles infused their music with experimental creativity and how Donald Johanson unearthed Lucy in Ethiopia, (un)decided’s collection breaks new ground. The designs offer wearers unlimited possibilities, blending traditional techniques with modern flair. The collection’s key pieces include intricately designed jacquard dresses, seersucker jackets with bold floral patterns, and embroidered blouses that exude elegance and creativity.

AI-Driven Innovation by Takanori Nagano

Takanori Nagano is a creative designer pushing new boundaries by using AI in fashion design. In the collection, pieces that used AI design inspired by “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” featured gradient rainbow-colored sweatpants, MA-1 jackets, and cargo pants. These captured the mood of the collection: a junction of technology with creative expression. It’s like late-century vintage swirled with state-of-the-art innovation. How he uses AI in fashion design supports his view of being modern and breaking the shell of the rare, old-fashioned, and extremely conservative industry.

The Lucy Theme: A Cultural and Historical Tribute

The “Lucy” theme was inspired by the very first ancestor found in Ethiopia 3.5 million years ago, a proposition referring to the cradle of humanity. Having this idea at hand, SEVESKIG diligently decided to create concepts regarding human evolution and make reflections in their fashion creations.

The motley hues in the line reflect the unfurled imagination of a child’s mind, while the dull colors mirror an adult’s reined emotions. This contrast is vividly brought out through intricate graphics, cuttings, and designs that form the collection and speak to both the innocence of childhood and the complexities of adulthood.

The theme’s focus is on the cradle of humanity, which centers on Africa. This is seen in models, most of which have African roots to represent human origins, diversity, and interconnectedness. In revisiting the very origins of humanity, and celebrating cultural milestones, both SEVESKIG and (un)decided succeed in fitting collections that hold historical depth with modern innovation. It gives a refreshing, reflective yet forward-looking look to fashion.
