TYPICA - connecting Japan’s coffee producers with the world
Typica, a Japanese online marketplace, or community platform, is on a mission: To connect independent coffee producers directly with coffee roasters all over the world.
Founded in 2019 by Masashi Goto and Ayane Yamada, Typica started out as an online platform that allows smallholder farmers who are producing green coffee, which are unroasted coffee beans, to establish relationships with roasters. Relationships that would otherwise be out of reach. When we say smallholder farmers, we mean producers in rural Japan who do not speak English and might not even have a business bank account.
Today the company has expanded beyond Japan's borders and outgrew its role as a mere intermediary between coffee producers and roasters. With partnerships spanning across South Korea, Taiwan, Ethiopia, Western Europe, Colombia, Bolivia, and more, Typica now works with around 3,000 producers, roasters, and coffee bars. This impressive list illustrates the company's ambition to create a sustainable, fair, and global direct trade network.
In their way to coffee-revolution, Typica's efforts have resulted in various major milestones. Thanks to their centralized marketplace, they are able to load multiple roasters' orders into a single container, thereby enabling small producers and roasters to directly trade green coffee from a 60-kilogram jute bag, rather than the minimum 18-ton container limit. They also make the direct trade of seasonable green coffee more accessible as well as ensuring full price transparency for all parties.
